Jetons, Medalets & Tokens. Volume Three, British Isles Circa 1558 to 1830.

Michael Mitchiner.  Sanderstead 1998. 590 pages, profusely illustrated throughout, valuations. HB. This volume explores how in the middle of the sixteenth century England (unlike France and the Netherlands) imported jetons as this country had no recent tradition of local manufacture. The regular striking of jetons had ceased in England at a date close to 1400 and by the reign of Charles I, the function of the jeton was changing in England. After the jeton had lost its role in general accountancy by the period of the Civil War the concepts it embodied were to diversify. One path along which the concept of the jeton was to diversify was in the role of a good quality template for disseminating information or for serving as a presentation piece. In this role the jeton evolved into the medalet, thereby serving a commemorative role.
