Aeolis, Myrina, 2nd cent. BC. Silver tetradrachm.


Silver, 32.2mm diameter, 16.73 grams.  Laureate head of Apollo of Grynion right.  Rv. Wreath around Apollo of Grynion standing right, holding patera and laurel branch, MYPINAIΩN and ΠΑ monogram behind.  BMC 2. SCG Copenhagen 223.  Good Very Fine (strict European grading, = US choice XF).

Apollo, the son of Zeus and Leto, and the twin of Artemis, goddess of the hunt, was the Greek god of the sun, prophecy, and the Arts: music, dance, healing, and poetry.

Grynion (many different transliterations) was a coastal city of Aeolis, in northwest Asia Minor, nowadays located near the modern Turkish village of Yenişakran in the İzmir Province.
