Divus Vespasian, died 79AD. Sestertius issued by Titus commemorating the death of his father.


Æ sestertius, diameter 31.2mm. Weight 19.33gm. [DIVO/AVG/VESP] in upper right field, S P Q [R] in exergue, radiate statue of Vespasian seated right on an ornate stool, holding long sceptre in right hand & Victory, holding palm & wreath, in extended left hand, sat on an ornate car drawn right by four elephants.  R. [IMP T CAES DI]VI VESP F AVG P M TR [P P P COS VIII], large S C  in centre. Sear vol.1, 2572.  Cohen 205.  RIC 143.  Overall very light pitting; much of the legend missing, otherwise, about fair.  A rare and interesting type.

The information with this coin from the Albert Reeves collection says that it was bought on 11 Oct 1982 from P Goodwin for £18 graded as "fair".

Recently, a very fine example of this coin made $2,500 plus 22% buyer's fee.
