For me personally, cardboard coins are almost as evocative of my childhood as the smell of freshly baked bread brought around by a man with a horse and cart.  They were either in toy post office sets, bus conductor sets, or used in schools during arithmetic lessons.  It was not long after the war and resources and equipment were scarce, so before we were allowed to use them the entire class had to wash their hands.  Miss Averil, the teacher, carefully counted all the contents of the boxes at the end of the session before the monitor returned them to the cupboard, and woe betide anyone whose box was missing a coin!
