BASIL BURCHELL (1765-1838), patent medicine dealer, later a jeweller, 79 Long Acre, London. Copper Halfpenny token.

Æ 28.8mm  [Halfpenny] ND.  ·BASIL BURCHELL· SOLE PROPRIETOR OF THE FAMOUS SUGAR-PLUMBS FOR WORMS No 79 LONG-ACRE  R. · BASIL BURCHELL· SOLE PROPRIETOR OF THE ANODYNE NECKLACE FOR CHILDREN CUTTING TEETH  D&H 268.  GF-VF  The piercing is as these were made to attach them to the 'anodyne necklace' which the baby used for teething.  The 'sugar-plumbs' were made with the active ingredient of lead acetate, which probably killed more children than the worms !

He also sold gold and silver lockets, coral teething rings, silver feeding bottles. He operated  from 79 Long Acre, near Drury Lane, London. The necklaces could also be bought 'by appointment' from Mrs. Rundal Ts, late Tutt's Medicine Shop, exactly facing Mr. Hazard's lottery Office at the Royal Exchange. The necklaces, priced at 5 shillings and 5 pence, possibly consisted of beads of peony wood which could be sucked by teething children to relieve the irritation in their gums.
