Sarah Whitaker writes in her preface:  
My father, Mike Ewing, started these lists of mottoes as a companion publication to the eight volumes of Catalogues of Commemorative Medals that he had published with Andrew Whittlestone. Although his main collection and passion was the Commemorative Medals, Dad was interested in all areas of numismatics and had a large eclectic range of subsidiary collections, he also loved cataloguing, listing and cross referencing everything. When we were sorting out his ‘Den’ after he died in 2013, it was no surprise to find folders full of lists relating to various aspects of para numismatica. Among these were one file marked “Alphabetical Index of Mottoes from Impersonal Heraldry” and another “An Index of Mottoes used by Municipal Authorities” all in Dad’s tiny hand writing, along with a pile of letters and cuttings all about a wide variety of fields using mottoes. It was clear that the majority of work on the Impersonal and Municipal mottoes had been done on paper, he had even made notes on what should be included in an introduction, but the Peers were not started, even though there was correspondence showing an interest in including them. I am lucky to have been able to share Dad’s interest in coins, so I decided to try and finish what he had started.
Nine years later here is the result!
