Poseidonia, originally a Greek colony, was captured by the Lucanians in at the beginning of the 4th century BC and the name was corrupted to Paestum. It had the unique privilege in Italy of being alowed to issue its own bronze coins down to the time of Augustus and Tiberius.

The information with this coin from the Albert Reeves collection says that it was bought on 18 November 1981 from Martin Coins for £15.
