Northamptonshire & the Soke of Peterborough Tokens & Checks.

Peter D S Waddell. Published by Galata Print Ltd., Llanfyllin. 2012. A4 (210 x 297mm). Laminated card pictorial covers, 77 pages, fully illustrated throughout the text in colour.
This book describes the many interesting metal objects usually described as tokens, or checks, that can be associated with Northamptonshire and the Soke of Peterborough.  Many of these pieces have a monetary value expressed on them and passed as convenient money at the time.  They are a tangible representation of our social history that would otherwise pass unnoticed.
It covers traders’ tokens from various towns and villages in the county from the mid-17th century to the co-operative society checks and dividend tokens of the 20th century. It includes the ‘unofficial farthings’ of the 19th century, most of which probably served as traders’ advertisement pieces. There are also the refreshment checks, colloquially known as ‘pub checks’, of the 19th and 20th centuries, which served a multitude of purposes. Chapters on ‘machine tokens’ and other miscellaneous numismatic items round off the volume.
The book is extensively illustrated and the section on 17th tokens is notable as it provides illustrations of most of the 180+ known tokens and indicates the location where these pieces may be found.
A short introduction at the beginning of each section gives background information on how many of the items were used.  New

This is a valuable aid to anyone researching local numismatics, as well as social and family history.
