BRITANNIA.  1797  Britannia seated left on a rock holding an olive branch and a trident. The shield at her side bears the Union flag.  A ship sails away on the sea. This iconic ‘Cartwheel’ coin was struck at Matthew Boulton's Soho Mint located near Birmingham. They get their name from their large size and wheel-like rims. They were struck with a fixed date of 1797 until 1799. Both obverse and reverse were engraved by Conrad Heinrich Küchler.
