George III, 'cartwheel' penny, 1797


Æ 35.8 mm diameter, 3,4mm thick. Wt 28.24 gm.  GEORGIVS III· D: G· REX. His laureate bust right, ten leaves in wreath,  K·: on truncation.  R. BRITANNIA.  1797  Britannia seated left on a rock holding an olive branch and a trident. The shield at her side bears the Union flag.  A ship sails away on the sea. The rock on which she sits has a tiny SOHO engraved below the shield.  S.3777. Peck 1132. VF

This iconic ‘Cartwheel’ coin was struck at Matthew Boulton's Soho Mint located near Birmingham. They get their name from their large size and wheel-like rims. They were struck with a fixed date of 1797 until 1799. Both obverse and reverse were engraved by Conrad Heinrich Küchler.
