The county town of Kent, is pleasantly situated on the banks of the river Medway, distant 35 miles from London, 9 from Rochester, and 26 from Canterbury. Maidstone was formerly written Meddestrane, and according to our best authorities, was, in the time of the ancient Britons, esteemed their third chief or principal city, and was a Roman station of considerable importance. The population in 1821, was 12,508.
