This appeared in ‘Toy Coins’ by David Rogers (Published by Galata Print, 1990) and reference was made to SCMB August, 1968 in by Graham Teasdill :
'Some ten or twelve years ago a few collectors were deceived by replica doubloons and pieces of eight minted for Scarborough Corporation. The pieces of eight were originally distributed on the 'Hispaniola' in Scarborough Harbour until this ship was returned to a film company for use as Pegasus in Moby Dick. The pieces of eight then joined the doubloons by being periodically buried on the mock Treasure Island in Scarborough Mere. Parties were taken out to the Island in a Motor launch disguised as a sailing ship and encouraged to dig for the buried treasure of imitation doubloons and pieces of eight. The inscription on the 'coins' is in English.'
