Netherlands, Amsterdam World Exhibition, 1895.

Gilt brass, 30mm diameter, integral suspension loop, 10.9 grams. WERELDTENTOONSTELLING AMSTERDAM above exhibition building, MEI - NOVEMBER 1895 in ex.  Rv. No legend, three-masted frigate at sea.  EF

The city of Amsterdam was host to three world expositions at the end of the nineteenth century. All were held on the land behind the Rijksmuseum, now Museumplein square. Each had a different theme. The 1883 was on the theme of international colonial development, the 1887 was on food, and the 1895 was on the themed on hotel and travel.  Previous expositions had included such novelties as the telephone, and working incubators for premature babies, which aroused some controversy.

The main building depicted on the medal was designed by French architect Paul Fouquiau, in a Moorish style. It was constructed of wood covered with plaster and painted cloth, to give the impression of marble. The building contained pavilions representing 28 different nations, including Belgium, Canada, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Japan, the United States of America, the Ottoman Empire, Siam, Transvaal, and the host nation of the Netherlands.
