St. Helena and Ascension Island are small, isolated islands in the Atlantic Ocean, with populations of around 4,300 and 900 people, respectively. They are some of the most isolated places in the world, especially St Helena which has no aircraft landing facilities. Which is why Napoleon Bonaparte was sent there in exile.

The St. Helena Pound is the official currency of Saint Helena and Ascension, two islands in the Atlantic Ocean that are members of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha (which uses the British Pound). The St. Helena Pound is pegged to the British Pound at par.

The economies of St. Helena and Ascension Island are heavily dependent on government support, either in the form of aid, or in Ascension Island’s case, the military which use it as a landing place for US aircraft. When Dr David Rogers, an anæsthetist, collected these notes the only communication with St Helena was a weekly boat from South Africa, which had to be unloaded via lighters.
