The Representation of the People Act 1832 was an Act of Parliament that brought major changes to the electoral system of England and Wales. Introduced by Earl Grey, it abolished the 40 shilling franchise which had its origins in a statute of 1429 limiting who could vote for the knights of the shire - the most prominent members of the Commons at the time.
