In two ways, this volume marked a new departure for the sylloge. It was the first volume in the series to deal exclusively with the coinage of the Ancient Britons, and was the first attempt ever made to produce a corpus of the material available from all sources for a particular section of this field. The first part of the volume deals with the coins in the British Museum which belong to this series; the second part covers the coins in other collections, public and private. The introduction reviews the coinage of the Coritani in the light of the hoard-evidence, which is set out in detail. In planning this volume the sylloge committee has borne in mind the wide range of the interests served by this ancient coinage at the point where numismatic, historical, and archaeological problems meet and react on one another.
