George Berry. Published by B A Seaby Ltd., London. 1988 HB (red cloth with gilt-lettered spine). vii + 168 pages. Illustrated throughout in the text with b&w illustrations. 152 x 234 mm. Almost as new.
The author looks at seventeenth-century tokens in a somewhat different way from usual and treats them from the point of view of the various trades of the issuers: inn and tavern keepers; coffee houses, butchers, bakers and candle-makers; booksellers, town pieces, and many others. An interesting and readable account of the times, includes gaols, religion and politics. For a readable, overall view of the tokens of the seventeenth century, this is probably the best account.
