Elliott was the commander of the British garrison on Gibraltar, successfully defending against the Franco-Spanish siege lasting from 1779 to 1783, the longest siege endured by British forces. For this heroic effort, Elliot was awarded the title of the first Baron Heathfield of Gibraltar.
