The Architectural Medal - England in the Nineteenth Century.

Jeremy Taylor.  A British Museum publication. 1978  HB (brown cloth boards with gilt-lettered spine).  xiiii + 244 pages. Illustrated throughout in b&w in the text.  220 x 275mm.  ISBN 0714108405  Corner of dj clipped to remove price, otherwise a very good clean copy.

Covers a wide variety of buildings: cathedrals, churches, art galleries, hospitals, institutions, schools and colleges, town halls, stations, bridges, houses, the Houses of Parliament, the Metropolitan & City Police Orphanage, Blackpool Tower, National Liberal Club and over 200 other monuments and edifices.
The ordering of the medals initially seems to be curious and haphazard - but it is in order of the date of completion of the building.  Some of the buildings have since been demolished, or converted into supermarkets, etc. Part 4 of the book is a section on the architects and designers.  Part 5 is a section on the medallists, sculptors and publishers. There is also a good comprehensive index.

NB This is a heavy book and will attract extra postage.
