The Roman Imperial Coinage (RIC). Volume IV. Part 1. Pertinax to Geta AD 193-212. PB

H A Mattingly, E A Sydenham and C H V Sutherland  Spink, London. First edition, 1936.  xvii + 406 pages + 16 plates.  PB, uncut.  The cover and bottom of spine a little frayed, pages slightly browned, internally

Known as RIC this is the standard reference used worldwide.

The object of this work is to present for the student, or collector the coinage of imperial Rome classified by mints and date.  Thus being very different from the alphabetical order of reverse legend favoured by Cohen, which the authors realised had to change if a greater understanding of Roman coins was to be achieved.  To this end each volume has a series of indexes, types, legends, etc., so as to make coins easy to find.

A general introduction at the beginning of each volume deals with the mints, the money system, types, and how the reigns are arranged.
