One source has a co-operative society founded in 1839 by Jordan Chadwick, a prominent Chartist. The local Co-operative group, which is still operating in Tillicoultry, says that it was founded in 1844. It had sixty shareholders. It does not appear in directories until 1877 when its officers were: Grocery - Peter Thomson, president; James Aitken, secretary; Hugh Bennet, treasurer. Drapery - Benjamin Senior, president; James Leishman, secretary; James Campbell, treasurer. Baking - Daniel M‘Laren, president; Thomas Knox, secretary; James Galloway, treasurer. By 1886 it had acquired limited liability status. In 1905 the society amalgamated with the Baking Society.
