Obverse designed by Arnold Machin. The reverse is the work of Thomas Shingles and Emanuel Hahn featuring a native American Indian and a voyageur, a travelling agent for a fur company, paddling a canoe by an islet on which there are two trees. In the canoe are bundles of trade goods; one of the bundles is inscribed HB, for the Hudson's Bay Company. The near-vertical lines in the background represent the aurora borealis or the northern lights.
