Denmark, Frederik III, Krone 4 Mark, 1659/60. Commemorative.


Silver, diameter 40.3mm, 22.26gm.  IIII * MARCK * DANSKE * 1659 * around, in centre, crowned F3 monogram above rock within inner circle, EBEN  EZER in field.  R. * SOLI * DEO * GLORIA  Hand issuing from cloud holds a sword that cuts another hand reaching for the crown, ii Feb. in field.  Hede 100B; Schou 36; Sieg 53; Davenport 3576.  Attractively toned, strong Very Fine

Commemorates the Battle of Copenhagen on 11 February 1659, when the Swedish king Karl X was defeated.  
Eben-Ezer means 'the stone of help'.  After a victory of the Israelites over the Philistines, Samuel took a stone and placed it between Mizpah and Jeshana, and he called it Eben-Ezer and said, 'Until now the Lord has assisted us'.
