Henry Thoby Prinsep. Wm H Allen, London, 1844. HB vi + 124 pages + 17 plates of good line drawings. 144 x 222mm.
Original green blind-stamped cloth, crudely rebacked, small title label gilt on the spine. Edges and especially the corners heavily rubbed; some foxing and browning to the plates and the prelims, as usual, the pages are less badly foxed.
Prinsep (1792-1878) was the son of a prominent EIC servant, both of whom spent much of their lives in the east. Aged 17 he went to Calcutta in 1809, at the age of seventeen, and stayed there until his retirement in 1843. His brother James, a prominent scholar, also lived in India. Upon James's death in 1840, Prinsep inherited his brother's coin collection and a notebook, which became the basis of this work.
