† In order for the pieces to gain an immediate acceptance these were deliberately made to look as if they were old and worn, so if you want to collect lovely objects, do not attempt to collect these. Many of them were intended to look only ‘fair’ when they were in ‘as struck’ condition. It is said that they were boiled in oil to add to the effect, so as well as a worn aspect, they often have a nasty colour, which makes photography difficult.
