Germany, Lippe-Detmold. Simon I. 1275-1344. Silver Pfennig or Sterling.

Diam. 19.6mm. 1.31g. [+NOBILIS] SIMON Half-length figure of the king facing, cross on breast, his right hand raised in blessing, in his left he holds a rose. Towers and churches around. Rv. MON ETAL IPPE around a triangle within which there is a rose with three crosses, one in each angle. Thomsen 6195; Grote 44. A previous owner of this coin has lightly marked the weak IP of LIPPE with Indian ink, otherwise VF/Good VF, and better for the issue. Well-struck and well-centred. We have not been able to locate a better specimen of this type sold in the last 10 years.

Ex Dr David Rogers collection. Bt. Spink.

The reverse bears a very slight similarity to the Irish coins of King John.
