Charles I, death memorial medal, 1648, by Thomas Rawlins.


Silver, 27 mm diameter, weight 4.37grams.  IANII: 30· 1648· CAROLVS· PRIMVS· MORITVR· ET· VIVIT· EST· NOBILE· VICENDI· GENVS· PATIENTIA· in two circles of legend around his bust left in high relief, wearing the robes and star of the Garter. In his hand, a crown of thorns and scroll with a motto on ribbon CHRISTI· TRACTO·  Rv. IMMOTA TRIVMPHANS on scroll over rock buffeted by winds and waves, all incuse in imitation of engraving.  M.I. 1, 342, 191.  Suspension loop missing, slightly bent, dark toned, almost Very Fine/Good Fine.  Extremely Rare.

This medal was cast and chased by Thomas Rawlins, a pupil of Nicholas Briot, and appointed Engraver at theTower Mint in 1643.
