Describes in detail, reign by reign, the design, weight and composition of each type of coin issued.  A broad outlook is taken and the coins seen against the economic background of the times.  Around 800 representative coins are illustr.  Although the title suggests that the subject of the book finishes in 1900, a brief discussion of later coins - until the introduction of decimal coins is made.
