VB = Volunteer Battalion.  A battalion is a military unit typically consisting of around 300 to 800 soldiers, usually infantry, commanded by a lieutenant colonel. They were not regular soldiers, but civilians who met at a camp and trained together.  Volunteer battalions were formed in the 19th century in response to the fear of invasion by the French.
