Brass, 26.8mm diameter.  E. CHEW & SON * BIGGLESWADE * around 1/-  R. TEA DEALERS. FAMILY GROCERS & C   A metal detectorist's find. Some earth adhesions and dark toned, otherwise Good Fine.  Rare.

Ebenezer Chew, born 1848.  1881 census: aged 33, grocer, employing 2 men and 2 boys. Married to Annie, age 31, born 1850. Children Henry Ernest born 1876 and Mary born 1880.

The 1847 Post Office directory has 'Ebenezer Chew, bootmaker & grocer, Market Place.
The business is listed in the 1864 and 1869 Post Office directories as 'Ebenezer Chew, boot & shoe warehouse & grocer, High St.  In 1869 there is another entry for Ebenezer Chew, leather seller, Shortmead Street.
The business is listed in the 1877 Post Office directory as 'Chew & Son, grocers, wine & spirit merchants & glass & china dealers, High St.; 1890 Kelly's as Chew & Son, grocers & wine merchants, High St.; in 1898 Kelly's as 'grocers, High St.'

Both Ebenezer and Henry were keen photographers.
