The first two chapters of this social history outline the origin and development of inns, taverns and alehouses in this part of South Wales and border towns, and examine brewers, cider-makers and wine merchants. Extensive research has resulted in the other twelve chapters which are organized geographically and explore the changes in buildings, innkeepers, publicans and customers. There are archive photographs of pubs, photographs of drinking, notices of sale of premises, pub checks, contemporary adverts, and much more.
